NEWS Chicago O'Hare airport opens new runway
Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) opened Runway 10R/28L Thursday October 15. The runway is 7,500 ft x 150 ft and will only handle 5 percent of all daytime flights annually over the next five years. The cost of the runway and two taxiways was $516 million, and planes are being controlled by a new 218-foot-tall airport tower that cost $41 million to build, according to the FAA and the Chicago Department of Aviation. Since the runway is several miles from the passenger terminal complex, the average taxi time per plane to the gate is estimated at about 20 minutes, FAA simulations show.
